Breastfeeding & Bottle Feeding
All about my breastfeeding, pumping and formula supplementing journey. Read below what has worked for me and a comparison of two breast pumps from Medela that I have tried and what I enjoyed the most about each one of them.

I have been getting a lot of questions about my experience with feeding my baby and what methods I use. First off, let me say its been quite the journey!
When baby Liam was first born, I was strictly breastfeeding for the first few days and wow did it hurt! I was unsure I could get used to the pain and deal with it! But I stuck it through with the help of a lactation consultant. She showed me how to properly hold the baby and get a good latch which definitely takes away some of the pain. I would definitely recommend seeing a lactation consultant to help if you are having trouble with your baby latching. To help alleviate the pain, I also used nipple cream after every feeding. It helps so much! The one I am using is called Lanolin.
At my baby's first paediatrician appointment, the doctor said Liam's weight went down so she recommended that I supplement with formula after every feeding to help bring my baby's weight up. She also recommended that I pump for 15 minutes after every feeding to help tell my body to produce more milk. I had already prepared myself for pumping because I knew that I wanted to be able to bottle-feed my baby for when I am going out and for when I wanted to give myself a break from breastfeeding. I have partnered with Medela to compare both the Medela Sonata breast pump and the Medela freestyle breast pump so that I can review them for you guys! Bottle feeding has honestly been a life saver for me. As much as I love breast feeding because of the bonding I get with my baby, I also enjoy giving myself a break to relax and be able to support my baby properly! Whenever my milk supply was up and I was able to pump excess milk, I started to freeze them in the Medela storage bags for times when I am low on milk supply or even out of formula.
After using both the Medela Sonata and Freestyle breast pumps, below are some of the pros for each of them. They're both great pumps but differ in a few aspects which may stand out to you more depending on your lifestyle. I am personally enjoying the Medela Sonata right now because I have been spending a lot of time at home and don't really need to move around much since I pump while working on my laptop haha. But I could imagine wanting to use the freestyle more when baby Liam starts to crawl so that I can run after him!
Medela Sonata Breast Pump
- Handsfree with a pumping bra;
- Connects to the Medela app on your phone to record pumping times, milk amount etc; This was beneficial for me when I had to monitor baby's feeding due to his weight!
- Very quiet!
- Touchscreen display with countdown timer that is easy to use.
Medela Freestyle Breast Pump
- Handsfree with a pumping bra;
- Easy to move around with it; clips to your body;
- Small in size, great to take with you for travelling;
- Longer battery life than the Sonata.
Hope this blog post helps you with feeding your baby and choosing a breast pump if you're interested in pumping!
